We partner with a trusted network of more than 70 organizations that lead community-driven efforts to help families facing non-criminal, civil legal challenges.

HOW WE DO IT

In addition to awarding  grants, the LBF supports a variety of statewide, volunteer programs & projects and strategic partnerships that enhance our mission and objectives.

HOW TO APPLY

Applications for 26-27 Annual/Sustaining Grants will open in October 2025. Categories of LBF Grants along with their guidelines are listed below. Visit the Grantee Portal to submit applications, award documents, and quarterly reports. 
Promotes administration of justice and benefits Louisiana’s statewide justice community. Initiatives for consideration must meet at least one of the following criteria: The advancement and maintenance of statewide technology, the coordination of statewide intake and referral, or disaster/emergency response.
Current LBF Grantees may apply for grants up to $50,000, on a 50% to 50% ratio matching basis, with the purpose of assisting in the acquisition or renovation of an office building and/or property. The Children’s Legal Services grant program helps provide legal assistance to needy children in areas of law which affect their safety, well-being, and future development. Annual grants are available to: organizations providing direct legal representation of children, in matters ranging from delinquency to access to special education, mental health, and foster care services; organizations engaging in impact litigation and/or systemic legal reform efforts on behalf of children; organizations that provide lay advocacy for children in legal proceedings; and organizations that assist with the administration of justice with respect to children. These agencies enable people to leave abusive relationships and seek safety for themselves and their children. Essential services provided by these agencies are legal services, education of domestic/dating violence, and establishing collaborative relationships with law enforcement, judges, clerks of court, and prosecutors. By offering safety to these kids and their families, we seek to break the cycle of violence and offer hope for their future. Nine Community Partnership Panels are comprised of LBF Fellows who act as regional chapters of the Foundation. These panels identify needs in their community and fund efforts to address those needs. LBF’s Kids’ Chance Scholarship Program is the state chapter of a national organization that awards scholarships to the children of workers who have been killed or permanently and totally disabled in an accident compensable under a state or federal Workers’ Compensation Act or law. Applications for this scholarship program open in December 2025 and close February 27, 2026. Read more about Kids’ Chance and how to apply here. 
Grants are awarded for law-related educational programs benefiting children and/or the public. Law-related education is the teaching of legal rights, responsibilities, and the role of the citizen by bringing together teachers, community leaders, and legal professionals. Eligible organizations are funded by the LSC federal agency and provide civil legal services to the indigent in each parish of the state. Attorneys and paralegals, provide free legal services in many areas of the law including: spouse abuse, divorce, child custody, adoptions, child support, child in need of care matters, child abuse and neglect, medicare benefits, unemployment compensation, veterans benefits, social security and SSI claims, welfare, public housing, and landlord/tenant matters. Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP) provides forgivable loans of up to $5,000 per year to attorneys working in a public interest position. The loan is disbursed quarterly and is forgiven after completion of 12 months employment at the legal aid provider. Recipients of this funding are welcome to re-apply annually for assistance. Recipient identities are kept confidential. My Community Cares (MCC) is a community-driven, neighborhood-based approach to strengthening families and preventing child abuse and neglect in the State of Louisiana. Services are provided to promote child and family well-being and prevent children from entering foster care. Funding is for full-time attorney positions fully dedicated to MCC work. Through the work of staff attorneys and paralegals, these programs provide legal services of a special nature, such as mental health and child advocacy mediation. Applications for this grant open October 2025 and close December 2025. Read Other Legal Services Providers grant guidelines here.
These programs are often operated by the local bar association. These projects utilize the local private bar to handle cases for the poor pro bono in many legal areas. Applications for this grant open October 2025 and close December 2025. Read Pro Bono grant guidelines here.
A portion of the fees collected by the Louisiana state courts through motions for pro hac vice admission filed by out-of-state lawyers not licensed to practice law in Louisiana are directed to the LBF for distribution for the Legal Service Corporation’s programs providing civil legal aid in Louisiana.
These grants are administered in collaboration with justice community stakeholders providing umbrella support services to several or all civil legal aid providers.
Through Acadiana Legal Service Corporation and Southeast Louisiana Legal Services this funding provides free legal representation to children in need of care, foster care, and non-custodial, and for the provision of adult civil legal services within the state’s civil justice system.
